Who We Are
The Islamic Center of Charlotte (ICC) is the city’s first Muslim community center, established in 1988 to serve as a spiritual, educational, and cultural hub for Muslims and the broader Charlotte community.
Founded in 1988, originally as the Islamic Society of Masjid Al-Islam, ICC was created to meet the growing needs of Charlotte’s Muslim population, which at the time had few dedicated spaces for worship.
The center is located at 1700 Progress Lane, in a building that was formerly a church and later converted into a mosque.
To meet the growing needs of our community, we’ve launched the Al-Nour project, a multi-phase expansion that includes a new community center, a future masjid, and plans for a full-time Islamic school. Al-Nour reflects our commitment to building a lasting legacy of faith, education, and service.
Mission & Services
ICC aims to unite the community through Islamic principles, focusing on the Quran and Sunnah.
It offers a wide range of services:
- Daily prayers and Friday Jumu’ah services
- Youth counseling and mentorship
- Marriage and burial assistance
- Free Arabic classes and Quran recitation sessions
- Community outreach and interfaith events
Education and Engagement
ICC hosts regular educational programs such as:
- Khaterah sessions (spiritual talks) after specific daily prayers
- Arabic classes for non-native speakers
- Collaborative events like BELIEVE-LEARN-LEAD with youth organizations
Community Impact
ICC plays a vital role in fostering interfaith dialogue and civic engagement, welcoming both Muslims and non-Muslims to participate in its programs. We’re more than just a mosque. We’re a place where people come together. We welcome Muslims and non-Muslims alike, and we strive to be a space of peace, learning, and unity. Whether you’re new to Islam or a lifelong believer, we’re here to support your journey.
We pride ourselves in offering a welcoming atmosphere and being committed to authenticity, avoiding innovations (bidda’ah) in religious practice.
Organizational Structure:
- General Assembly – the foundation of our governance, made up of registered community members. They have voting rights and help shape the direction of the center through elections and feedback.
- Board of Directors – elected by the General Assembly, this board oversees operations, sets strategic goals, and ensures that our programs and services align with our mission.
- Board of Trustees Council – appointed by the Board of Directors, this council provides oversight and long-term guidance, helping us stay true to our values and maintain institutional integrity.
- Religious Affairs Council – This body includes our Head Imam and assistant Imams within the organization’s Executive, ad-hoc and Outreach Committees. They guide our religious programming, lead prayers, and ensure that our teachings are rooted in authentic Islamic principles.

I have attended this mosque since 2005. I feel at home here. The sisters are friendly and the imam and administrators are very helpful and knowledgeable. I can honestly say this community has been great to me and my family.
